About the work

Someone Please Turn the TV Off is a sculptural installation: a large monster built from stacked screens, standing on tall spider-like metal legs that keep it out of the visitor's reach. The screens broadcast propaganda, news and brainrot mixed with messages about fascism and war. You cannot switch them off.

The work is a contemporary response to Max Ernst's L'Ange du foyer from 1937. Where Ernst used the hearth as the centre of the home, that centre today is the television, the smartphone, the audiovisual screens and speakers.

This work is currently in the concept phase and has not yet been realised.

How it is developing

The starting point was Max Ernst's L'Ange du foyer, the angel of the hearth. He painted a monster to depict the rise of fascism in 1937. My thought was that the monster of the new rising fascism looks different from the monster of back then. The figure on the battlefield no longer stands there with a sword, but broadcasts a constant cacophony of propaganda through monitors, televisions, smartphones and speakers.
